Byzantine Weights, Circa 5th-6th century. Weight of 1 Nomisma (Bronze, 21 mm, 4.34 g, 12 h), a circular coin weight for a solidus made from an antoninianus of Probus, Rome mint, 281. IMP PROBVS P F AVG Radiate and cuirassed bust of Probus to right. Rev. ADVENTVS AVG / R(thunderbolt)Z Probus on horseback to left, raising his right hand in salute and holding long scepter in his left; to left on ground, captive seated to left. RIC 158. Beautifully patinated. A very attractive and carefully produced weight with four cuts on the edge forming a cross on the obverse and a star of eight rays formed out of four deeply engraved straight lines on the reverse. Very fine.
